What sort of country do we want
Britain to be?
Most British people probably
think of themselves as living in a liberal democracy. What
happened in the period leading up to the bombing of Yugoslavia,
during the bombing, and events since then, have shown Britain to
be an entirely different sort of country. There can be little
doubt that international respect for Britain and the other NATO
countries has plummeted as a result of the bombing of
Yugoslavia.
Britain’s foreign policy should
be based on respect for all human beings, respect for human
life, non-aggression, honesty in government and respect for
international law, conventions, and treaties, and the United
Nations. Britain’s objectives should be peace, co-operation,
improving life for the peoples of the world.
Britain expects
The people of Britain expect
integrity in government and the proper functioning of democracy.
The people of Britain expect our government to operate within
international law, with respect for the United Nations, and
international treaties. The rewriting of the NATO treaty,
without reference to Parliament, is unacceptable.
Yugoslavia has been done great
harm by Britain and other NATO countries. It deserves our
apologies and substantial help to repair the damage we have
done.
Justice Yugoslavia appeals to
Parliament and the British people to condemn the bombing of
Yugoslavia, to call those who planned it to account, to insist
on the payment of reparations, and to insist on a return to
integrity, democracy and a humane, peaceful and law-abiding
foreign policy.
